January and in the mid 70s...A little worried

This is going to be a quick post. I just wanted to get this thing started. Like my garden knome?

All of the seeds I was planning to sow in January and February instruct you to plant before the last frost or in early spring. Well, it's January 14th and 74 degrees farenheit in the shade. I'm a little worried. In good faith, I went ahead and sowed the silverbeet seeds that came in the mail today. "What are silverbeets?" wonders you... Imagine if spinach made sweet love to a rainbow and had little babies that somehow had beet roots (making the rainbow wonder if spinach was having an affair with the beetman). Yes, they are wonderful :) Tomorrow I will plant some kale and brussel sprouts and hope that they make it through this so-called winter we're having here in Southern California.

Here's what has sprouted and already been planted in the vegetable patch: carrots, onions, garlic, buttercrunch lettuce, broccoli, spinach, beets.

I put a huge order into Burpee's but am still awaiting my seeds. I've got plenty of preparation to do in the meantime!

  1. The chard (silverbeet) should do great. I've heard that it is somewhat heat tolerant and will grow through the summer if it doesn't get too hot. Not too much of a chance of that here though. And buck up, our annual last frost is in march (coulda fooled me). So the plants should be fine:)

  2. P.S. What did you order from burpees?

  3. Yay! That is excellent news. Promise not to scoff at my over-ambition? Mind you, they're seeds for the entire year (and I'm sure I'll have more than enough seeds to share)...

eggplant, onion, pea, pepper, crookneck squash, zucchini, tomatoes, watermelon, basil, chives, oregano, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, giant pumpkins, "ruby queen" corn (it's red), several types of carrots (including purple, yellow and red ones), mint, thyme, chammomile, sunflower, snapdragon, marigold, passion flower, nasturtium, and alyssum.

    I'm really excited! Obsessed, actually.

  4. Me scoff at you?! You should see how many seeds I have. It's ridiculous. We should totally get together and trade some. I mean, I don't really need 100 yellow pear tomato seeds or Chioggia Di Marina Pumpkin seeds. It'd be fun to have a seed swapping party and trade with a bunch of people. I mean, seeds only last so long, I'd rather give them away to pals than have them rot on the shelf.
